Early Years

Ruth Parasol was born in San Francisco, California in the late 1960s, but she spent the majority of her youth in Mill Valley. Richard Parasol, her Jewish-Polish father, was an entrepreneur who was involved in numerous successful enterprises. He was a Holocaust survivor who instilled his family with Jewish values. Guna Parasol, her Swedish mother, remained at home and took care of the family. Ruth eventually acquired two younger sisters, with whom she has maintained strong relationships over the years.

Even at a tender age, Parasol possessed a great deal of ambition. In high school, she was known as “Ruthless Ruthie” and was the class valedictorian. She had an unprecedented 4.1 grade point average because she was always willing to do additional credit to advance. If she ever received anything less than a perfect score, she would dispute with her instructors about why she deserved a higher grade. This was often to her advantage.

Parasol was not only exceptionally intelligent, but also very athletic.
During her secondary school years, she participated in lacrosse, basketball, tennis, and softball. She was named athlete of the year on two distinct occasions for her athletic accomplishments.

After graduating from high school in 1984, she was offered a number of scholarships, but she chose to enroll at the University of San Francisco because it would provide her with free tuition and room and board. Following in the footsteps of her father, she chose to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business.

Parasol struggled with depression during her freshman and sophomore year of college but still managed to keep her grades up despite those difficulties. Once she decided to manage her depression with medication, her college experience improved significantly. She made many new acquaintances and spent her weekends attending parties. On occasion, she and a group of companions would travel to Las Vegas for the weekend to gamble at slot machines. This was her first experience with wagering, and she adored it.

When she graduated in 1988, she was unsure of the career path she wished to pursue. She determined after careful contemplation that she wanted to become a lawyer. In 1992, she graduated from Western State University of Law with a law degree and began her employment search.
